If you are considering getting a new computer with Windows XP Professional, here are a few things you should know about XP Downgrade rights.
If you purchase Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 Ultimate, you can legally have XP Professional installed on your computer with Microsoft's XP Downgrade Rights program. When one of those two operating systems is purchased, you will receive a Windows 7 COA (Certificate of Authenticity) sticker on the side of your system. This licence allows that operating system to be installed. However, it also allows Windows XP Professional to be installed instead, if you so desire. Please note: even if you get Windows XP installed using downgrade rights, you will not receive Windows XP restore media! The reason for that issimple. According to the terms of the Microsoft Operating System licence, you will only receive restore media of the version of Windows that you have purchased. So, since Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate was the Operating System purchased, that is the only restore media that can be legally included with the system.
Microsoft has announced that they are extending the downgrade rights program to 2020. Therefore, if a new system is purchased, Microsoft Windows XP Professional can still be loaded on it until that time, as long as a valid OS is purchased.
