Procedure: (Google Documentation)
Use the Chromebook Recovery Utility
If you need to recover or update your Chromebook, you can use the Chromebook Recovery Utility Extension to create recovery media and get your Chromebook working like new again.
What you need to create recovery media
Before using the utility, make sure that you have:
- A flash drive or other storage media that can hold at least 4GB and that you don't mind clearing.
- An extra Chromebook, Windows, or Mac computer with administrative rights and Chrome browser installed.
Create recovery media
If your Chromebook isn't working properly, you can use an extra Chromebook or another Windows or Mac computer to create recovery media. Otherwise, you can follow these steps on your Chromebook if you want to create recovery media to use later.
If you're using a Linux computer, follow the instructions listed after Step 6.
- Install the Chromebook Recovery Utility app on your Chromebook or on your Windows or Mac computer.
- Open the app.
- Two options:
- Type in the model number of the Chromebook (ENGUARDE C3A for the CTL Chromebook) you want to recover to get the correct recovery image. You can find that number at the bottom of the error message on your Chromebook or on the recovery screen in the app. It downloads the large file each time you create an image. For multiple USB drives use the next step.
- Download the CTL Chromebook image file. Click the "gear" at the top right in the Chromebook Recovery Utility and select "Use Local Image".
- Click the Continue button.
- Insert your storage media into an open USB or SD Card port on your Chromebook or on your Windows or Mac computer. The tool will automatically detect the media.
- Use the drop-down menu to select the appropriate storage media.
- Click Continue.
Important: All of the data on the recovery media will be deleted if you continue.
- Make sure the media you'd like to use for your recovery is listed.
- Click the Create now button.
The tool will then create the recovery image on your selected media. Don't remove the flash drive or SD card while this is happening. After you see the message saying that your recovery media is ready, you may remove it from your Chromebook or computer.
- Use the shortcut Esc+Refresh (above the #4 key), then press down the Power button and wait until you get the Exclamation Point Chrome OS is missing screen.
- Plug in your recovery drive.
- Wait for the image process to complete (about 5 minutes).
- Remove USB and it will automatically reboot.
- Done.
More info: Restore your Chromebook using your newly-created media.
The Chromebook Recovery Utility partitions the USB or SD media into different sections, which means you can’t store data on it unless you wipe the drive clean.
You can use the Chromebook Recovery Utility to erase the recovery files and partitions so that you can use the USB or SD media for storage again:
- Open the Chromebook Recovery Utility app and click the settings icon.
- Select Erase recovery media.
- From the drop-down menu, select the recovery media you'd like to erase.
- Click Continue.
- Make sure the media you used for recovery is listed. Remember, all of the data on the media will be erased.
- Click Erase now.
The tool will then erase the recovery image on your selected media. Don't remove the flash drive or SD card while this is happening.
After you see the message saying that your recovery media is prepared for formatting, you may remove it from your Chromebook and format it using a tool provided by your operating system.

The link for the list of all recoveries doesn't work, but I need the direct download because the USB that I have doesn't want to work with the "Chromebook Recovery Utility" it pops up with a message saying that the download got interrupted. It might be because of my internet, but I think the direct zip download might work. If anyone has the zip files for my Chromebook "SNAPPY E2B-B8C-62A-O3Z-E6A-A6Z" could you please send it to me?
Also, before you say, yes my USB has more than 8gb of storage. In fact, it has about 14gb of usable space.
Thanks
The download page is working now. Sometimes it goes down. It's managed by someone outside CTL (not sure who). Snappy is up with this link:
https://dl.google.com/dl/edgedl/chromeos/recovery/chromeos_12871.102.0_snappy_recovery_stable-channel_mp.bin.zip
Thanks, it works now!
The Recovery Utility is awful. It created 10 virtual drives on my USB stick, and doesn't bloody work.
My recovery is not working very well for me either. Do you know the file for RELM D25-B9A-F7G-K3Q-U46 it is a Ctl touch chrome book
Peppy c6A-w7c-A5H image to download please
Trying to install GalliumOS:
I removed the Write Protected Screw from the back of the Chromebook.
I tried ESC+Refresh+Power key to Enable Developer Mode then I pressed CTRL+D then pressed Enter to turn off the OS verification.
Enable USB boot:
Pressed Ctrl+D at the initial startup screen to load Chrome OS.
Pressed Ctrl+Alt+F2 at the Chrome OS login screen.
Login using the password 'chronos'
At the terminal prompt, type: sudo crossystem dev_boot_usb=1 dev_boot_legacy=1
Powered off the Chromebook by typing in 'sudo poweroff'
Now on startup, pressed Ctrl+L, got the BIOS screen instead of Chrome OS.
2. Install Gallium OS:
Used this website to install the Gallium OS through ISO USB install: https://wiki.galliumos.org/Installing
3. Post Installation:
Chromebook rebooted and I saw the screen where it was written "Chrome OS is missing or damaged. Please remove all connected devices and start recovery".
4. Recovery:
Later on I tried Google's recovery tool using this site 'https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/chromebook-recovery-utili/pocpnlppkickgojjlmhdmidojbmbodfm' and added that extension into chrome.
I used model number ASUKA D2S-A3C-J4N-W6W-G3K-A72 mentioned in recovery mode. So created USB recovery drive and connected that USB drive in Chromebook getting message "the device you inserted does not contain Chrome OS".
Same tried with 4 USB drives as I thought that it might be the issue with USB also tried Linux as well for creating the recovery disc. Same thing I am getting over and over.
5. Wanted to re-install OS
Tried to perform the same steps as I did earlier but Chromebook was not able to boot via USB. After that I saw that CTRL+L command is not working getting 2 beeps on OS verification Off page and then it went to that page where it was asking to perform recovery.
When I am pressing CTRL+U then I am getting "booting from external media (usb/sd) not enabled." at top of the screen.
Nor I am able to open shell mode again as not able to pass recovery mode or that page where it says "Chrome OS is missing or damaged. Please remove all connected devices and start recovery".
I think I made one mistake that when I enable the RW legacy mode that time I didn't upgrade the BIOS firmware (I guess that is my mistake)
I am stuck at Chrome OS Recovery mode. Please help me to get it resolved guys. I tried 2 computers and 3 laptops in both Windows and Linux OS to create this recovery USB stick but no luck. I am screwed here.
Please help me on this. Please help.
