Personalizing devices: How far should we go?

I’ve been thinking about how much we customize our devices nowadays, from wallpapers and widgets to notification sounds. Something as simple as choosing different klingeltöne (ringtones) can really give a personal touch, but it also raises a question: how much personalization is useful, and when does it become distracting?
Do you prefer to keep your devices minimal and standardized, or do you enjoy adding as many custom touches as possible? And do you think personalization has an impact on productivity or just on comfort?
